A 31-year-old man has handed himself over to Johannesburg police in connection with Monday’s arms cache find in Katlehong on the East Rand.

The stash of arms included limpet mines, rocket launchers, hand grenades, AK47s and UZI sub-machine guns.

Investigators were led to the house, which is thought to be used as a storage facility for the armoury, by intelligence reports.

Another suspect will appear in court on 20 January.

The police’s Vish Naidoo said, “He is currently in police custody, and he’s likely to face charges of being illegally in possession of explosives, arms and ammunitions.”

Another weapons cache was discovered in Witfield on the East Rand on Thursday morning.

Police are on the scene of another arms discovery on the East Rand.

Officers found another 11 guns in a house in Primrose, two days after a massive arms cache was uncovered in Katlehong.

“Three of the firearms are licensed wh9ile the other firearms are not licensed. There is also 13,402 rounds of ammunition,” said the police’s Lungelo Dlamini.

Meanwhile, a woman detained in connection with Tuesday’s discovery will know on Thursday if she will be facing any charges. Detectives initially took her in for questioning but on Wednesday decided to detain her as a suspect.

She owns the house in which the weapons was found. The stash of weapons that officers discovered included rocket launchers, hand grenades and rifles.

Detectives do not believe she is the true owner of the arms and are hoping to catch those responsible.

Tests are also underway to determine where the weapons came from –and whether they were used to commit robberies.

  1. Firearm centres to closed

    January 13 2011 at 09:03pm
The 23 firearm registration centres in Gauteng will be closed down because the Firearms Control Act has been amended, provincial police commissioner General Mzwandile Petros' office said on Thursday.

“This office wishes to state that the decision was based on the amendment regulations as proclaimed in the Firearms Control Amendment Act which indicates that all renewals and competency applications will be dealt with at local ( police station) level,” said Colonel Neville Malila in a statement.

This comes after AfriForum spokesman Nantes Kelder “condemned” the decision by Petros to close the centres in an article published by the Beeld newspaper on Thursday.

Kelder said the decision would cause chaos in future and nobody knew what was going to happen to pending applications.

Malila said: “This measure therefore takes the services closer to the community who don't have to travel to a central place but instead apply at their local police station.”

He said the police stations had been supplied with application forms and they were also available on the SAPS intranet, where it can be printed if not available.

Minister of Police Nathi Mthetwa announced the amendment of the Firearms Control Act 28 of 2006 on December 14.

The centres will be shut down on Friday. -
