E-toll team to meet with car rental groups
Alex Eliseev | 2 days ago
JOHANNESBURG - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is expected to meet with various road freight and car hire organisations on Tuesday, to discuss the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.
The controversial e-tolling project is also due to be discussed.
The e-toll inter-ministerial committee, chaired by Motlanthe, met with members from Business Unity South Africa (Busa) behind closed doors on Friday, and it appears the same will apply on Tuesday.
The Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa), which applied for an urgent interdict to halt the tolling project, is due to hold a similar meeting with the committee on Thursday.
Its chairperson Wayne Duvenage said he would attend both Tuesday and Thursday’s sessions.
He said Outa hopes Government will change its stance on e-tolls as more discussions are held.
While government is fighting to defend e-tolling in the Constitutional Court, the alliance believes the project is irrational and too expensive.
The implementation of e-tolling will see motorists paying 35c/km to travel on some of Gauteng’s highways.
