3 surgeries robbed in Soweto

Johannesburg - Two robbers were shot and wounded on Sunday afternoon after they tried to rob a doctor's surgery in Protea Glen, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

Three men in a blue Toyota Conquest went to Dr Iyanda Zulu's surgery, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele said.

Two of them went inside under the pretext of seeing the doctor. A plain-clothes policeman who had come for a consultation, noticed something was amiss. He called for backup from an off-duty colleague.

The men had tied up and blindfolded the doctor. While taking medicine and the doctor's laptop to their car, they found two officers and the driver of the getaway car waiting for them.

When the officers told them to put up their hands, they started shooting, said Makhubele. The officers returned fire, hitting one man in the stomach and leg.

"The other one was shot in the buttocks, and the bullet went through his body and came out through his genitals."

The gunmen were taken to a local hospital under police guard. The driver was arrested. All three would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon facing a charge of business robbery.

Makhubele said it was the second time that Zulu's surgery had been robbed in the past two weeks.

Another two surgeries in Protea Glen were robbed around the same time.

Investigations were continuing to determine if the three could be linked to these crimes as well.
