Web crime to surge around SWC
Johannesburg - Trained experts are essential for law enforcement agencies to successfully fight cyber crime, said National Prosecuting Authority deputy director Paul Louw in Sandton on Tuesday.Speaking at a 2010 web security summit at the Sandton Convention Centre Louw said that cyber crime investigations often fail at an early stage due to digital ignorance."There is still widespread ignorance among law enforcement agencies in the gathering of digital evidence," he said.Louw said it was difficult and time consuming for investigating officials to understand the technology used in cyber crimes."Law enforcement agencies need help as cyber crime technology gets outdated very quickly."Intelligent investigationsLouw went on to say that there was a greater need for more proactive intelligent investigations to fight cyber crime.Despite the expensive security measures put in place by businesses, sophisticated techniques employed by cyber criminals meant that they were surpassed far too easily, he said.Louw said there was a need for more proactive, intelligent investigations to fight cyber crime."Should we not proactively prepare for such an event and take the lead to protect our digital assets?" he asked.Cyber crime was a dynamic environment and a significant economic threat to the country with staggering losses, he said."We need to make use of intelligence-driven investigations, to be proactive rather than waiting for someone to report the crime to the police station," he added.Reacting to cyber crime after the event made things problematic for investigating officials as it resulted in too many lost opportunities, Louw said."Reliance on historic investigations only is definitely not the answer."Louw advised businesses to work closely with law enforcement agencies to prevent being targeted by cyber criminals."The best way to fight cyber crime is to form a close partnership with us and let us use intelligence-driven investigations," he said.
