Durban - Four men were killed in a shoot-out with police in Durban North on Thursday.

Two policemen and a gunman were wounded, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Officers came under fire when they stopped a car and tried to search it.

The two policemen were in a stable condition at a local hospital. The wounded gunman was taken to hospital.

"It is suspected that the men were in the area to commit a crime. Our intervention may have prevented another innocent person from being a victim of crime," Naicker said.
