According to police spokesman Lt Colonel Katlego Mogale, the two boys, who were friends, got into a fight during second break.
Donald Molefe, 16, died at the scene after being stabbed several times in the chest with a pocket knife, Beeld reported.
Izak Theron, the headmaster, was called to the scene of the fight, "but by the time I arrived, everything had already happened," he said.
He also said he was mystified by the presence of the knife, because his pupils were searched at the school gate every morning.
Diana Teba, Donald Molefe's aunt, said the family was extremely shocked by the tragedy, particularly because the two boys had been such good friends.
"They visited each other's homes regularly... Donald was a quiet and intelligent child who never bothered anyone," she said.
Theron said a third child was stabbed in the hand when he tried to intervene during the knife fight.

How many Barbarians are being bred in South Africa Daily.
Was the objective the pencil or hidden anger, greed or jealousy?
