Bloemfontein - Four men were arrested on Monday after a Free State farmer called his farm security unit about unwanted men on his property, police said.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the farm security unit members at Wesselsbron reacted to a call from the farmer, 59, from the farm Blydskap at 07:00.

"The farmer was outside his farmhouse when he saw four people hiding at a bunch of trees on his farm."

Mophiring said the men allegedly pointed a firearm at the farmer but he managed to fire a warning shot first and they fled.

The farm security unit was activated and surrounding farmers, some of them police reservists, cordoned off the farm.

Mophiring said four men were arrested but no firearm was discovered.

Police seized a vehicle.

The men, aged between 23 and 42, were expected to appear before the Wesselsbron Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to face charges of trespassing and pointing a firearm.
