Mandela charity ex-chief faces charges

02 October 2010, 00:10
An official says the South African man whom Naomi Campbell testified she gave diamonds to is now facing criminal charges.
Jeremy Ractliffe appeared in a Johannesburg court on Tuesday. Prosecution official Mthunzi Mhaga said Friday that Ractliffe's next hearing on charges of possessing uncut diamonds is October 26.
Ractliffe was fund chief executive in 1997 of The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund when Campbell says she received uncut diamonds after a charity fundraiser also attended by Liberian President Charles Taylor. Taylor is being tried in The Hague for trading in illegal diamonds to arm Sierra Leone
rebels.
Campbell said she gave Ractliffe the diamonds as a donation. Ractliffe gave them to South African authorities after Campbell's August testimony at Taylor's war crimes trial. - Sapa-AP
