Middelburg - A 45-year-old Mpumalanga medical doctor accused of raping 11 girls, some as young as 13, has been remanded in custody.

The doctor, who runs a surgery and a church in Middelburg, was not asked to plead when he appeared in the Middelburg magistrate's court on 11 charges of rape, three assaults with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property and possession of unlicensed firearm.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning with three others after being accused of attacking three men who wouldn’t join their church.

“It is believed that the doctor and three male members of his church tried convincing three men to join his church. A fight broke, which included shooting, but no one was shot,” provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe told African Eye News Service.

Sedibe said soon after the four men were arrested, 11 girls arrived at the Middelburg police station and told police that the doctor had previously raped them.

He said doctor’s co-accused were only charged with assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property and possession of unlicensed firearm.

The accused appeared in court on Thursday and the case was postponed to December 20 for formal bail application.
