Johannesburg - A man died after falling off a bakkie during a police chase in Ga-Rankuwa, near Pretoria, on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said the man was part of a group of nine men who had robbed two cash-in-transit security guards.

They were escaping in a car and a bakkie when police spotted them. The man fell off the back of the bakkie during the ensuing chase. He died while being treated at a nearby hospital.

Mogale said five of the men were arrested when the vehicles came to a stop. Three others escaped.
