The family of a South Coast couple, who were allegedly knocked and killed by an off-duty police officer, are angry that the man was granted bail in the Hibberdene Court on Monday.

The couple Mandlenkosi Ndelu, 66, and his wife Sindisiwe,40, were found on Saturday morning in bushes near the R102 near Mtwalume.

Officers initially thought the couple had been murdered but later discovered that they had been hit by a vehicle.

Police Brigadier Phindile Radebe said the officer, Sergeant Siyabonga Msomi, was arrested after police found the vehicle that was allegedly involved in the crash at a panel beater.

It is alleged that Msomi knocked the couple down and then moved their bodies so that it would be hidden and not easily discovered.

Msomi was granted bail of R3500 when he appeared in court yesterday. He is charged with culpable homicide and failing to report an accident.

Ndelu's son-in-law Dumisani Mpisane said the family were angry that Msomi had secured bail.

"They are not pleased at all that he got bail. They are very upset and angry."

Msomi is expected to appear in court next month.
