A police sergeant was shot dead and another wounded in a gun fight between police and robbers who held up two cash-in-transit cars on the N1 on Saturday morning, Gauteng police said.While three gun men were arrested and eight firearms recovered, a police officer was wounded and another killed during the shoot out in Soweto, South of Johannesburg, Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said."About five cars held up two cash vans on the N1 near Maraisburg the shot two guards and took off with an unknown amount of cash between 7 and 8am today."During a car chase the gun men opened fire and wounded one police officer on near the Lenasia off-ramp.

Police followed them to Protea south where another gun battle ensued. During the shooting one officer was caught and killed.Three of the gunmen were arrested.The national police commissioner General Bheki Cele, visited the scene of the shootout."I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to our fallen hero's wife and family", Cele said."I will personally ensure that every effort is made to hunt down each and every member of this gang and bring them to book. Shooting on members of the police is totally unacceptable." - Sapa
