Ayanda Mabulu's painting Yakhal'inkomo - Black Man's Cry has been sold.
Following the highly publicised banning and unbanning of the painting at the Johannesburg Art Fair, it sold for the asking price, R89 000.
Greg Dale, curator of the Cape Town Commun.1 Gallery, confirmed that a private collector had bought the painting.
The fair's organisers, Ross Douglas and Cobi Labuschagne, banned the painting but reversed their decision when photographer David Goldblatt removed his exhibition in protest. Both their works were rehung on Saturday.
"We couldn't sell the work to a higher bidder if he'd already paid," said Mabulu, adding that this was not the highest price paid for one of his paintings.
The mixed-medium painting is about last year's Marikana massacre. It shows President Jacob Zuma's dog attacking a miner as Zuma is about to stand on the head of another miner as a concerned-looking Julius Malema looks on.
Commune.1 said the reversal of the ban was a victory for freedom of artistic expression.
