Port Elizabeth - The old saying that a dog is man's best friend has been proven again this weekend, when dogs belonging to a 16-year-old boy - who was arrested on a murder charge - didn't want to let down their master.

The boy was arrested after he allegedly intervened during a fight between his mother and stepfather in the Walmer township on Friday night.

According to the police, the 16-year-old, whose identity can't be revealed, allegedly attacked his stepfather with a sharp object before fleeing the scene. The man died shortly thereafter.

When the boy's mother took him to the police in Walmer on Saturday afternoon to hand him in, they found themselves in an unusual situation.

"The boy's three dogs, who follow him everywhere, decided to lie outside the police station and wait for him," Stephen Marais, police spokesperson, said on Sunday.

According to Marais the dogs waited in front of the police station from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

After a while the police officials took pity on the dogs and gave them food and water.

"Seeing your dogs lying outside the police station waiting for you, even though you've been arrested, is not something you see every day.

"It also shows you that police officials also have feelings. They were so astounded when they saw the dogs lying there that they made sure the dogs were taken care of."

But later on Sunday morning, the dogs left.

Marais said he thinks it's because they realised their master wasn't coming out.

"Unfortunately I don't know the boy's address, and I couldn't get hold of the investigating officer.
"But I suspect the dogs went home.

"As soon as I have the address, I'll go to the house myself to check," added Marais.
