Legislature staff take it easy
21 June 2010, 12:33
It's another short week at the Gauteng Legislature.
On Monday morning the legislature was again closed to the public. Police at the entrances said this was because the staff were off again "because of the World Cup" and would be back on Wednesday.
Legislature officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Last week legislature staff got a six-day weekend - Friday June 11 to celebrate the opening match in which Bafana Bafana was playing, the usual two-day weekend, then the Monday and Tuesday (June 14 & 15) off, followed by the June 16 public holiday on Wednesday.
At the time, Legislature Speaker Lindiwe Maseko said the Friday was given to staff as an extra day off but that all staff were obliged to take the Monday and Tuesday as annual leave. Maseko said the staff were supposed to be back at work last Thursday. The legislature is in recess so MPLs are not expected to be there. - Staff reporter
