JOHANNESBURG - Shock-jock and host of The Rude Awakening on 94.7 Highveld Stereo, Jeremy Mansfield, has resigned.
Mansfield, who has been presenting the breakfast show for 13 years, announced on-air yesterday morning that he was hanging up the microphone.
Asked about his decision to leave, Mansfield said he felt there was more he could do to contribute positively to the community and South Africa than to “just host a breakfast show”.
Mansfield said he had been approached by Primedia to stay on and assist off air, which he’d be “happy” to do. After many years on radio, Mansfield said he was “tired” and looking forward to a “break”.
“I’ll be going overseas on holiday for three weeks and I’m also planning to take my mates to the bush.”
The bush seems to be a favourite with Mansfield, who plans to also celebrate his birthday by throwing a huge party ... in the bush.
Although he was diagnosed with cancer last year, Mansfield is adamant the disease didn’t influence his decision to leave and said he was doing well.
“I’ve been in remission since January,” he said.
Humming along to Shakira’s Waka Waka song, which he admits he wasn’t fond of at first, but has now grown on him, Mansfield predicted he’ll be in tears today.
“When I sing the national anthem with my hand on my heart, during the Waka Waka song and when the whistle blows after we beat Mexico”.

Apart from being a good presenter, Mansfield is known to have 'pissed' a lot of people off during his career at 94.7 Highveld Radio.
