Buses torched in Nelspruit

13 April 2010, 11:43

Nineteen buses were torched at Buscor depots in Mpumalanga early on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

A security guard told police that he heard a blast shortly after midnight followed by flames coming out of a bus parked in the depot at Oggo in Daantjie, outside Nelspruit.

The fire spread from one bus to another and because they were parked close to each other, 17 buses were gutted, said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

Another bus was burnt at the Spelenyana depot, also in Daantjie, and another at Malkutu at Kabokweni near White River.

Keys were also removed from the ignitions of six buses parked at Masoyi depot near Hazyview.

Hlathi said initial suggestions were that it may be linked to the sacking of a number of employees and an advertisement placed in a newspaper to fill their positions.

The company, which said it had lost R45-million, had offered a R50 000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest, while police were investigating a case of arson.

Forensic teams were on the scene gathering evidence. - Sapa
