Scandal hits Vavi's wife

Cosatu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi's wife, Noluthando, has reportedly quit her job amid revelations of a financial scandal at SA Quantum.

The Sowetan newspaper on Wednesday reported that Mrs Vavi, who has not admitted guilt, had stated in her resignation letter that the scandal "perceived to have been a bribe, has put me in an invidious position".

The Cosatu secretary-general, in response to a Mail & Guardian article which said his wife had helped secure "direct and indirect business" with NUM and Numsa, insisted there was no conflict of interest arising from Noluthando's consultancy work for a financial services company doing business with unions.

The weekly newspaper reported three weeks ago that SA Quantum, the company which Noluthando acted for and which paid her R60 000 a month plus commission, allegedly offered its reporter a bribe of R120 000 to suppress news of the deal. At the time Cosatu said Noluthando was not marketing pension fund products to unions.

"Cosatu has no relationship with SA Quantum and if it did that would constitute a conflict of interest indeed. The provident funds of workers are controlled by workers and employers who have a 50-50 representation in the board in terms of the law.

"My wife has no relationship with any of the provident fund boards. I have no direct relationship with any provident fund board that has a relationship (with) SA Quantum," Vavi said. - IOL reporter
