Man arrested 16 years after escaping

A man has been arrested for murder 16 years after he escaped from custody for another case, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.
“Our members arrested Lamlani Khumalo yesterday (Tuesday) for murder in Umhlali. He allegedly connived with a man to kill his wife in Bhamshela, north of Durban on March 2 this year,” said Superintendent Vincent Mdunge.
Khumalo had escaped from the police custody for another case in 1993, he said. The charges Khumalo faced in 1993 would be released later on Wednesday.
A firearm believed to have been used during an armed robbery in Johannesburg was recovered when Khumalo was arrested, Mdunge said.
The man who worked in cahoots with Khumalo to allegedly kill his wife was still at large.
