A Cape Town couple found in their bathtub with their throats and wrists slit had attempted a double suicide, police said.

The young woman - who is originally from the UK - and her boyfriend were found by a family friend in the bathroom of their Burgundy Estate flat in Plattekloof on Monday afternoon. They are recovering at Tygerberg Hospital.

Michael Elvidge, a neighbour, was one of the first on the scene.

"It was a shocking sight. The wounds were quite deep and, by the time that we found them, the blood had stopped flowing. They were both in the bath, in a state of semi-undress. It was not a pretty sight."

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said that the couple received treatment "in the nick of time".

"We were called to the house to find the young couple in the bath. Both had deep lacerations to their wrists and necks," he said.

"Advanced life-support intervention had to be performed on both of them before they were rushed to Tygerberg Hospital."

Police have refused to name the two because "no crime" is being investigated. Spokesman Lt-Col Andre Traut said that the police would not comment.

"We did attend at the scene, but then withdrew as it was an attempt to commit suicide."

An estate agent who was in the complex at the time said: "The woman called her friend to tell her that they were going to kill themselves because 'they could not go on and had had enough of life'.''

The Times has established that a suicide note was found in the flat, which the couple were renting. The letting agent said he had a legal obligation to protect the privacy of his clients.
