Armed gang robs en route to Zim

16 April 2010, 15:04

A gang of five men pistol whipped, shot at and robbed a bus full of passengers bound for Zimbabwe on the N1 freeway in Limpopo, police said on Friday.

Five people were injured in the robbery around 10pm on Thursday.

"Apparently the driver had to stop after noticing that the bus had a puncture, about 10km north of Kranskop toll plaza between Mookgopong and Modimolle towns," said Lieutenant-Colonol Malesela Ledwaba.

"[Several] armed men approached the bus and ordered the driver to open the doors. Eventually they forced their way into the bus... [and] allegedly fired some shots; then robbed the occupants."

Cash, jewellery and cell phones were taken from the driver and the 53 passengers.

Five people, including the bus driver, suffered head injuries after being pistol whipped. They were all treated at a local hospital and later discharged.

The bus was travelling from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe.

The Modimolle police were searching for the five men and appealed to anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact Lieutenant-Colonol Malesela Mogale on 082-565-8606. - Sapa
