THE release of six men from Westville Prison last week, despite being wanted by police on numerous bank robbery charges should be investigated by the Public Protector.

Johann Burger, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said he was shocked by events.

“I am not sure how much more of this sort of monumental incompetence our country can survive.

“I am not surprised that the Hawks are keeping quiet, I would too. This is hugely embarrassing.

“As it is the duty of the police to execute arrest warrants I believe the blame for releasing suspects wanted on such serious cases has to lie with the police.

“Nobody should be allowed to walk out of a prison if there are warrants out for their arrest.”

Burger said the release of the gang should be investigated by the Public Protector.

“It is the duty of the Public Protector to protect the public. In this case I believe the public have definitely been placed in danger by the release of this gang.”

Despite dozens of warrants of arrest being in circulation for the gang, the six were allowed out the prison after being acquitted on charges of robbing Sibaya Casino north of Durban.

In Joburg on Monday Carnival City Casino was robbed by a gang of robbers using a modus operandi allegedly matching that of the gang that robbed Sibaya Casino.

Yesterday requests in writing for comment from the Minister of Police were not responded to.

Nor was comment forthcoming from Anwar Dramat, national commander of the Hawks.
