JOHANNESBURG - Residents in Highlands North have described the chaos during a tense shootout in which three alleged robbers were critically wounded.

It is understood the men jumped between three homes as they tried to escape from police and local security.

Residents said they were terrified when they saw the men in dust masks running through their yards and heard the subsequent shootout.

The three suspects first struck a home on Eighth Street, where they tied up a family and stole their personal belongings, but they were surprised by a security guard who arrived at the scene a short while later.

The gunmen then fled into a yard of a neighbour, where the owner, who was still in the bathroom said he saw them through the window.

Police said he pushed the panic button and managed to get to his firearm, he then opened fire on the three men.

But the suspects were met by police and security guards in the front driveway where a shootout ensued.

The three alleged robbers were shot in the stomach and chest.
