Johannesburg - Two men were arrested after they apparently opened fire on police who were doing a routine patrol in Midrand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Captain Julian Claassen said two police constables were on a routine patrol on Monday night when shots were fired at them.

"The police were driving behind an Audi A4, when they reached a street intersection, occupants of the Audi opened fire on them," said Claassen.

Police returned fire hitting one man, another was arrested and two others managed to run away.

The injured man is under police guard in hospital.

The motive for the shooting is not known and a case of attempted murder is being investigated.

Durban - A policeman was killed in a shootout with eight men in Jozini on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Three policemen were performing a routine patrol of the area at around 07:00, when they came across a Combi whose occupants were acting suspiciously, Brigadier Phindile Radebe said.

"As they approached the vehicle it is alleged that the occupants opened fire on the police, wounding Constable Malusi Mchunu, 33, several times."

Mchunu was rushed to the nearest hospital but later died of his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was also shot and killed as he tried to wrestle a gun from another police officer on the scene.

Four people were later arrested for their involvement in the shooting and charged with murder.

"The others are still at large."

Police were trying to establish whether they were linked to other crimes. They would appear in court soon.

Wild shootout on SA border

Bloemfontein - Five heavily armed robbers were shot dead in a wild shootout on the Free State border with Lesotho.

The international shooting incident happened weeks ago outside Wepener, but details have not been released until now.

The robbers fled over the border from Lesotho and were shot down by Lesotho police in a gun fight.

Free State police initially referred enquiries about the incident to Lesotho police. After it was confirmed that the shooting had taken place in the Free State, enquiries were referred to Interpol.

Interpol involved

"The matter is Interpol related because it involves two countries. It is a crime that was continued (in South Africa) after it began in Lesotho," said police spokesperson Captain Harry Nagel.

It appeared that a gang of up to 14 armed robbers wanted to strike a cash-in-transit van in Mafeteng, Lesotho, but SA police had warned Lesotho police about it in time.

A police force from Maseru was sent to investigate and the suspects were seen in Mafeteng. The gang then fled across the border to SA.

It would appear that Lesotho police received permission to cross the border.

The robbers started firing at police and a wild shootout followed. Senior members of the police in the Free State were apparently also on the scene.

Five robbers were shot dead and one was arrested. The robbers were presumably from Gauteng and Lesotho.

Some of the fugitives could still be in South Africa.

We are of the opinion that the new police structures cannot cope with violent crime which is on the rise!

Crime in SA has always been international!
