Johannesburg - A police officer and his pregnant sister-in-law were critically wounded while his wife was killed in a shooting in Cosmo City near Randburg on Monday night, Johannesburg paramedics said.

The officer was "fighting for his life" at Milpark Hospital while his sister-in-law was taken to Olivedale Hospital, stabilised and then airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath shortly after 20:00, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The 16-week-pregnant woman had been shot nine times and was in a critical condition. The officer's one-year-old child was unharmed and in the care of a police chaplain.

Police spokesperson Captain Julia Claassen said preliminary investigations revealed the officer shot dead his wife, then fired several shots at his sister-in-law before turning the gun on himself.

"I can confirm that a police officer was found in a critical condition and his wife dead. It's been alleged that the police officer shot dead his wife, but we are still gathering information."

Who issued this type of person with a competency certificate?

While justified firearm owners have to wait 3 - 6 years for their competency certificates (if lucky).

Jaco Bothma and the police minister should be held responsible for this shooting.
