MISQUOTED: General Bheki Cele
THE office of General Bheki Cele says it is not true that 10000 rogue police officers are in jail.
In fact, Cele says only 1000 officers are in custody.
It was the office of Mpumalanga MEC for safety, security and liaison Sibongile Manana that quoted Cele in a statement as saying 10000 police officers were in jail.
The statement quoted Cele speaking at the funeral service of two of the three Amersfoort police officers who were murdered last week Sunday by unknown gunmen. – Sowetan Reporter

NATIONAL police chief General Bheki Cele has revealed that well over 10,000 police officers are in jails throughout the country.
However, Cele did not say how many were already serving sentences or still awaiting trial.
Cele was speaking at the funeral of two of the three Amersfoort police officers who were shot dead by criminals on Sunday last week.
Independent Complaints Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini said they were still compiling the statistics of police officers in custody and those who are awaiting trial.
“We are only going to release our stats in September as we are still compiling our report,” said Dlamini.
Cele called on corrupt police officers to leave the force as they were tarnishing the image of the police.
Cele said he was concerned that Mpumalanga had too many corrupt police officers.
“This province is horrible when it comes to corrupt police officers.
“Members of the organised crime unit in this province fight each other because they want to steal exhibits for themselves.
“One day you arrest people with 13 bags of dagga, the next day you find only three,” said Cele.
Constable Joseph Molefe, 32, and reservist Constable Sabelo Ngwenya, 24, were laid to rest in Amersfoort on Sunday while Constable Tebogo Maroga, 30, was buried in Burgersfort in Limpopo on Saturday.
“We are proud to be at this funeral because these boys died while on duty. They were real heroes .
“They had an option of soliciting a bribe from their attackers and allowing them to continue bombing the bank,” Cele said.
“If they had done that they would probably be alive today, but they sacrificed their lives and confronted the criminals.”
The criminals used AK-47 and R5 rifles to shoot at the three officers.
Two died at the scene while a third drove to the police station where he collapsed, and was rushed to hospital where he died.
The funeral was also attended by MEC for safety, security and liaison Sibongile Manana and a large contingent of officers.
